What is San Fu

San Fu (三伏) is a period of time based on the Chinese lunar calendar, determined using the Heavenly Stems, Earthly Branches, and the 24 Solar Terms. Though the dates vary each year, they usually fall between mid-July and mid-August.

This period marks the hottest, most yang-filled time of the year, divided into First, Mid, and Last Fu phases.

What is San Fu Moxibustion (三伏灸)

"Treating winter diseases in summer”

San Fu Moxibustion is a 2,000-year-old TCM therapy performed during summer’s peak yang energy. It helps clear stored cold, restore balance, and build resilience for winter—especially effective for asthma, allergies, sinus issues, and joint pain.

Our Approach

To enhance effectiveness, we include Pre-Fu and Post-Fu stages—gently preparing the body before, and strengthening results after.

Best Time for Moxibustion

Moxibustion benefits the body year-round—but San Fu is when it’s most powerful. With peak yang energy and open pores, moxa penetrates deeper to expel cold and restore balance.

This once-a-year window amplifies results, following the TCM wisdom: “treat winter illness in summer” (冬病夏治).

Frequently Asked Questions

The main herb used is mugwort (Artemisia argyi), known in Traditional Chinese Medicine as 艾草 (ài cǎo). Revered for thousands of years, mugwort is considered a “wonder herb” for its ability to warm the meridians, dispel cold, and enhance circulation. In some treatments, we also incorporate fresh ginger, Chinese herbs, or customized herbal pads, depending on your condition.

Yes, many patients report improved sleep quality, reduced tension, and greater emotional balance after a session. By warming specific acupuncture points and regulating the nervous system, moxibustion can support deeper rest and calmer energy—especially helpful for those who feel wired but tired.

San Fu Moxibustion is especially beneficial for chronic conditions that tend to worsen in cold, damp, or seasonal changes. Common conditions include:

  • Chronic respiratory issues such as asthma, allergic rhinitis, and sinus congestion
  • Digestive problems like bloating, poor appetite, or loose stools
  • Joint and muscle pain, arthritis, and cold-related stiffness
  • Chronic fatigue, poor immunity, or feeling “always a bit off”
  • Menstrual irregularities and cold womb conditions in women

Because the therapy works by restoring yang energy and improving circulation, it supports your body’s ability to heal and regulate itself—particularly helpful for those with long-standing imbalances.

In most cases, no needles are used. San Fu Moxibustion is primarily a heat- and herb-based therapy, where moxa (mugwort) is burned near or on the skin over specific acupuncture points. However, for certain individuals, our TCM TCM practitioners may combine the treatment with warm needle moxibustion—a method that uses thin acupuncture needles gently warmed by moxa—for deeper therapeutic effect. This option is always discussed with you beforehand, and never done without your comfort and consent.

San Fu Moxibustion is safe when performed by trained professionals. It’s suitable for most adults and children over the age of 2. It’s particularly helpful for people with low immunity, chronic fatigue, allergies, poor digestion, or cold-related issues like joint pain.

Those who are pregnant, under 2 years old, have open wounds, or are extremely weak should consult our team before booking.

The treatment feels warm, soothing, and grounding. Many people say it’s like a deep inner recharge. You may feel a gentle heat and a sense of relaxation spreading through your body.

Absolutely. San Fu Moxibustion is preventive by nature. Think of it as seasonal maintenance for your body, helping you stay resilient, balanced, and better prepared for cold seasons ahead—even if you currently feel fine.

We usually recommend 3 to 5 sessions, ideally one during each phase of the San Fu calendar (pre, early, mid, late and post-San Fu). Your TCM doctor will customize the schedule based on your health status.
